What is SP?
In computing, the Microsoft SharePoint product sold by Microsoft includes browser-based collaboration and document-management platform. It can be used to host web sites that access shared workspaces and documents, as well as specialized applications like wikis and blogs from a browser. SharePoint is not intended to replace a full file server (it imposes, by default, a file-size limitation of 50 megabytes). Instead, it is targeted as a collaborative workspace. SharePoint interface is through a web interface, such as a task list or discussion pane. SharePoint sites are actually ASP.NET 2.0 applications, which are served using IIS and use a SQL Server database as data storage backend. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SharePoint
Users managed through Active Directory.
How We Are Using It

My Site is a personal site that gives you a central location to manage and store your documents, content, links, and contacts. My Site serves as a point of contact for other users in your organization to find information about you and your skills and interests. Content providers can use My Site as a method of customizing the information they present to users.

Teacher Site – blogs, wikis, document library (This is our district solution for blogs/wikis)
History – Where we were – Managed webserver —>SP 2003 —> SP 2007 – Why we needed it:
workflow
shared folders
accessibility at work and home
meeting collaboration
no need for software purchase
Teacher web pages
Blogs and wikis – district solution
Access control and tracking (see who made the changes and when)
Potential for student portfolios
Implementation:
Think about structure for site
Decision to create mysites or not and where to place those sites (think about the server configuration)
Decision to migrate away from existing web server

Professional development training/staff development (face-to-face, webinar, podcast, on-line training site)
- Face-to-face (individual, summer workshop, department)
- Webinar

Things to remember:
Expandable hard drive ability (we store on our SAN)
Rights – access control (with great power comes great responsibility) User can modify the rights at a granular level.
Road Ahead – Distance Learning – looking at the SharePoint Learning Kit – http://www.codeplex.com/SLK – provides ability for drop boxes, assignments – course management (tie to student information system) – single sign-on – Student mysites
